The generated electrons are transferred to the gate and flow through the gate external circuit while the generated protons (cations) are forced to diffuse from the gate, through the electrolyte and eventually into the channel by the electric field caused by the gate voltage, inducing a further de-doping of the channel (Figure S2c). [15a,16a,16b] Therefore, the additions of glucose result in decreases in the channel current (Figure 2a and S3a). According to the Bernards model and the Nernst equation, the channel current is modulated by Reaction (2) and thus sensitive to the concentration of glucose in PBS solution (See the working mechanism of OECT-based biosensors in the SI).
