WiFi Multimedia (WMM) is a wireless network feature that provides Quality of Service (QoS) enhancements for better management of multimedia traffic such as audio, video, and voice over Wi-Fi networks. WMM is a certification program developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to improve the user's experience with multimedia applications running over Wi-Fi networks.
WMM provides four Access Categories (ACs) that prioritize traffic according to the application's needs. The four ACs are:
- Voice (AC_VO): for real-time voice traffic such as VoIP calls
- Video (AC_VI): for real-time video traffic
- Best Effort (AC_BE): for non-real-time data traffic such as file transfers and web browsing
- Background (AC_BK): for low-priority traffic such as software updates and backups
By prioritizing traffic based on its type, WMM helps ensure that multimedia applications receive the necessary bandwidth and latency to deliver a smooth user experience.
