STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is a shunt connected FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) device used for reactive power compensation, voltage control and stability improvement in power systems. The Phasor Model of STATCOM represents the device as a voltage source in series with a reactance, where the magnitude and phase angle of the voltage source are controlled by the STATCOM converter to inject and absorb reactive power into the system.
The phasor model of STATCOM can be represented as follows:
V_statcom = V_in + jX_c * I_statcom
where,
V_statcom is the output voltage of STATCOM
V_in is the input voltage to STATCOM
X_c is the capacitive reactance of STATCOM
I_statcom is the current flowing through STATCOM
The voltage source V_statcom can inject or absorb reactive power into the system, depending on the phase angle difference between V_statcom and V_in. If V_statcom leads V_in, STATCOM injects reactive power into the system, whereas if V_statcom lags V_in, STATCOM absorbs reactive power from the system.
The Phasor Model of STATCOM is a simplified representation of the device, which is mainly used for steady-state analysis and design of power systems. However, for dynamic analysis and control, the detailed models of STATCOM, including the converter control system and the dynamics of the DC link, are required.
