Abstract: With the development of science and technology, substations have evolved from traditional substations to intelligent substations. In recent years, China has vigorously promoted the development of intelligent substations, speeding up the construction of intelligent substations. Intelligent substations are the direction of development of China's power system. Intelligent substations have excellent AC interactive performance, a layered structure of "three layers and two networks", and significant features of primary equipment intelligence and secondary equipment networking. In order to study and learn about intelligent substations, this paper will establish a primary equipment and system model of intelligent substations based on the theoretical foundation of intelligent substations, using an open HIL simulation system and Simulink module of MATLAB. According to the established model, the SCD file of the substation protection system will be modified under the IEC61850 communication protocol standard to complete the automation configuration of the substation, realizing the simulation of the intelligent substation by the HIL simulation system. Furthermore, using an open HIL simulation system, based on the above substation model, communication and interconnection with secondary protection devices will be achieved, allowing protection devices to operate in the event of a fault.
