Things to Consider

Primary

Output Voltage — Lower voltages are

required for today’s advanced DSPs,

FPGAs and ASICs. Both fixed and adjust-

able output voltage DC/DC converters are

available.

Input Voltage — As the voltage require-

ments of performance processors drop,

so can the bus voltage. The 3.3-V rail is

becoming increasingly popular in many

applications.

Output Current — When the maximum

output current of the device exceeds the

application’s current consumption, the

efficiency will be higher.

Secondary

Board Space — Integrated MOSFETs and

externally compensated versions allow

passive component flexibility and reduce

board space.

Ease of Use — The Switchers With

Integrated FET Technology

(SWIFT) designer software

tool saves development time

and speeds the designer through the

external component selection process.

Adjustability and Interfacing With

Other Modules — The amplitude of the

loadshare bus signal can be adjusted to

work with existing modular power supply

loadshare command signal ranges.

Master/Slave Status — One loadshare

controller, the UC3907, features a master/

slave output signal for interfacing with

other power supplies and end-system

diagnostic circuits.

Hot-Swap/Hot-Plug — The new

UCC39002 features the ability to hot-

swap or hot-plug modular power supplies

without disturbing the loadshare bus

“share” command.

Current Loop Compensation — Each of

these loadshare controllers offers design-

ers the ability to compensate the current

share loop as required by the system or

individual power supplies.

Things to Consider

Primary

Current Sensing — The power supply

output current can be sensed in either the

high or low side of the output being

loadshared. Two controllers (UC3907,

UCC39002) can be used in either arrange-

ment, however the UC3902 is for dedicat-

ed low side (ground referenced) current

sensing.

Output Voltage — The power supply out-

put voltage being loadshared must be

within the loadshare controller’s absolute

maximum voltage ratings if used in a high-

side current sensing application.

Single or Differential Current Sensing —

Optimal results can be obtained using a

differential current sense technique in

both high- and low-side applications. The

single ended configuration reduces pin

count for dedicated, ground-referenced

applications.

Single or Differential Share Bus —

Depending on the amount of noise in any

specific application, designers can choose

to use either a single-ended or differential

type common loadshare bus command

among the modules being shared. True

differential mode offers the most noise

immunity, but the single-ended variety can

also yield excellent results when designed

with a high amplitude loadshare signal.

Democratic Loadsharing or Master/

Slave Configuration — Each of the load-

sharing controllers is configurable for

democratic, equal loadsharing among all

modules. The UC3907 also features the

ability to operate in a master/slave

configuration.

Technical Information

• Loadshare is a control technique to

equalize output currents in all power

supplies being paralleled. Since it uses

the remote-sense terminals of the

power supply to adjust the overall

feedback loop, loadshare can be added

to existing power supplies at the sys-

tem level.

• Redundancy can be obtained at the

system level by incorporating one or

more power supplies than actually

required to deliver the full load current.

Should any power supply fail, the spare

power supplies will fill the void caused

by the failed unit. The damaged power

supply can be replaced without having

to shut the entire system off, thus pre-

venting “down-time.”

• Expandable systems can benefit signifi-

cantly from a loadshared power system.

Power supplies can be added at any

time as the systems are scaled-up and

load currents increased. Stocking only

one type of modular power supply is a

secondary advantage of loadsharing.
