Short circuit, also known as lateral fault, is the main reason for disrupting the normal safe and stable operation of the power system. It is generally divided into four common short circuit situations, namely three-phase short circuit, two-phase short circuit, single-phase ground short circuit, and two-phase ground short circuit. Using traditional mathematical calculations to analyze power system faults not only requires a large amount of work but also poses a high level of danger. In this study, MATLAB software was used to simulate and analyze power system short circuit faults. This approach not only avoids deviating from the actual situation but also reduces the danger of experiments. First, a blank model was established, and the modules in the power system module library of the Simulink component library were selected to build infinite power supply system and finite power supply system models. The graphical representations of the occurrence of the four short circuit situations were obtained, and then mathematical calculations were performed on the occurrence of three-phase short circuits in two different power supply systems to determine the amplitude of the periodic current and the magnitude of the transient current. Through related system simulations and calculations, the results showed that using MATLAB software for power system simulation is convenient, fast, and highly reliable.
