In the rapidly evolving automotive industry, the transformation of mobility is at the forefront of innovation. Gilles Mabire, Automotive CTO at Continental, discussed the concept of software-defined vehicles in a public lecture on June 14th. Global trends such as automated driving, cloud services, IoT, UX applications, and shared mobility are revolutionizing the way vehicles are designed and operated. One of the key trends driving this transformation is the shift towards software-defined vehicles. By 2036, it is expected that cars will have over-the-air capabilities, enabling software updates and new features to be installed remotely. This will not only enhance the user experience but also improve the efficiency and performance of vehicles. By 2031, the market for software-based features and services is projected to be worth $640 billion. This will create new opportunities for OEMs to collaborate with software firms and system integrators to develop innovative solutions for connected vehicles. In fact, 66% of OEMs are already planning to partner with software firms by 2026, highlighting the growing importance of software in the automotive industry. The future of vehicles will be based on common software platforms, enabling seamless integration of various features and services. This will not only simplify the development process but also increase the flexibility and scalability of vehicles, allowing for greater customization and personalization. Overall, the transformation of mobility through software-defined vehicles is reshaping the automotive industry and paving the way for a new era of connected and intelligent vehicles. With the increasing adoption of software-based features and services, the possibilities for innovation and growth in the automotive industry are endless.
