In the past forty years, childhood obesity has more than doubled. Various fitness technologies, such as activity trackers, exercise games, and mobile applications, are available to promote physical activity, but few technologies are designed to meet the specific needs of children. In my initial research, I found that children prefer social interaction, storytelling, and flexibility when interacting with these technologies. Other studies have shown that persuasive displays encourage adults to engage in physical exercise. As part of this work, a series of mobile applications were developed, collectively known as the KidFit Suite. These applications encourage children to engage in physical activity using social and temporal dynamics. I present the results of a user study involving 16 children (ages 6-11) who used the mobile applications in the KidFit Suite. These applications were primarily evaluated in terms of social engagement and temporal flexibility. In this study, children engaged with the mobile applications and enjoyed the collaborative and competitive aspects of social interaction. In terms of temporal flexibility, they preferred short synchronous games over long asynchronous games. Overall, the findings suggest that incorporating social and temporal dynamics into fitness games can positively impact children's physical activity levels. The KidFit Suite provides a platform for children to interact socially while engaging in physical exercise, which can make fitness more enjoyable and sustainable for them. Further research and development in this area could lead to more effective and engaging fitness technologies tailored specifically for children's needs. This study contributes to the growing body of research on technology-based solutions for promoting physical activity among children and combating the rising rates of childhood obesity.
