The study of MAC protocols in wireless ad-hoc networks, compared to fixed networks and cellular wireless networks, is of great significance due to the dynamic topology, limited wireless channel bandwidth, limited node capabilities, and limited power. The unique characteristics of wireless ad-hoc networks, driven by node mobility and the special nature of the transmission medium, render existing network routing and media access control protocols unsuitable. Various MAC protocols have been proposed to address performance metrics such as channel utilization, fair access for nodes, and energy consumption, aiming for high utilization, fairness, and low energy consumption. This paper mainly introduces MAC layer protocols based on IEEE 802.11 and various derived MAC protocols, and presents a detailed study of their solutions to problems such as hidden terminals, exposed terminals, energy saving, and fair access. Finally, after analyzing and comparing them, the paper summarizes their advantages and disadvantages, points out the key difficulties in MAC protocol design, and proposes future research directions. Key words: wireless ad-hoc network; MAC; hidden terminal; exposed terminal; energy saving.
