XT software is a thermal modeling analysis tool designed to simulate

the air flow and heat transfer in electronic systems, subsystems, and packages.

Such simulation can be used during the earliest stage of electronics systems development to

observe the effects of design changes on the thermal behavior, prior to building and testing the

prototype.

Overview of Simcenter Flotherm XT

Simcenter Flotherm XT uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyze airflow and heat

transfer and is specifically designed to investigate these phenomena within electronics

equipment.

Airflow (natural and forced) and heat transfer (as conduction, convection, and radiation) are

governed by conservation laws that can be expressed in a partial differential form. In

Simcenter Flotherm XT, the conservation equations are converted to a finite volume form. As

the name implies, the converted equations require a volume in which values of temperature,

pressure, and velocity are calculated. Hence the space (called the solution domain) that is being

represented in the model is divided into smaller volumes, known as mesh cells.

The more mesh cells in the model, the more points are calculated and the better the resolution of

the case, but this is at the expense of additional computer overheads to calculate the results.

The conservation equations are coupled (values for a variable depend on surrounding values of

that variable and also other variables) and non-linear. Hence they are solved in an iterative

manner, until the errors in the conservation equations are at an acceptable level.

For each model/project, you define the overall dimensions of the volume or enclosure to be

investigated, including the individual components that make up the design structure, and

Simcenter Flotherm XT superimposes a mesh. Each mesh cell denotes a region for which

Simcenter Flotherm XT calculates flow values (velocities, temperature, pressure, and so on) for

the model.

The properties of the air flow (for example, density, viscosity, specific heat) set at the default

values for dry air at 30°C can be changed, if necessary, to reflect the type of coolant used.

Appropriate boundary conditions (for example, ambient temperature, known mass flow rate and

heat sources) can also be added.

During program solution, Simcenter Flotherm XT integrates the relevant differential

conservation equations over each mesh cell, assembling a set of algebraic equations which

relate the value of a variable (for example, the temperature) in a cell to its value in its adjacent

neighboring cells.

Working with Simcenter Flotherm XT, you define the requirements, set up the mathematical

modeling parameters, construct the geometry, add solution mesh, solve the solution and display

the results.

Solution Domain

Simcenter Flotherm XT analyzes the model geometry and generates a solution domain

enclosing the model.

The solution domain’s boundary planes are orthogonal to the model’s global coordinate system

axes.

For external flows, the solution domain’s boundary planes can be distanced from the model.

For internal flows, the solution domain’s boundary planes automatically envelop either the

entire model (if heat conduction in solids is considered) or the model’s flow passage only (if

heat conduction in solids is not considered).

You can manually resize or redefine the solution domain using several options:

• By changing the solution domain’s dimensions

• By specifying symmetry planes

• By specifying periodic boundary conditions

When modeling internal flows, all the model openings must be closed with lids. This is a

requirement because boundary conditions at inlets and outlets must be defined on surfaces in

contact with the fluid, and lids provide these surfaces. You can create lids as Boss-Extrude

features on a part or as separate components in an assembly.

When modeling external flows, far-field boundary conditions are specified on the solution

domain boundaries.
