intensive primary products and import capital or tech-
nology intensive manufactures to obtain the capital and
technology that are necessary for their economic develop-
ment (Giles and Willians, 2000). Developed countries can
obtain natural resources and labor through international
trade. In the short term, this trade pattern can, to some ex-
tent, make full use of the afuent factor endowments and
international exchange can help overcome the resources
bottleneck that constraints a country’s economic develop-
ment. But in the long run, this trade pattern will lead to
the conflict between the human social development and
nature on the one hand, and on the other hand, inten-
sify the individual differences of the development levels
in the human society (Greenaway and Sapsford, 1994).
Since the time of entering into the 21st century, great
changes have taken place in modern humanism. Modern
humanism pays more attention to the real living condi-
tions of human beings (San and Jiang, 2005). The human
trade doctrine is firmly opposed to the traditional trade
development concept which aims at partially pursu-
ing the increase of the trade scale, and advocates im-
proving the international trade quality and considers
that the international trade activity should be harmo-
nized with the development of nature and humankind.
Along with the rise of the humanism in the eld of in-
ternational trade, almost every country pays attention to
the concept of the sustainable development of internation-
al trade. This article chose the export sustainable develop-
ment as the research object. On the basis of the analysis
of the theoretical connotation of the export sustainable
development, this article tried to establish an evaluation
indexes system and set up an evaluation model of export
sustainable development level and nally made empirical
research on the export sustainable development levels of
China.
Abstract:
With the effect of the human trade doctrine in the
international trade eld, almost all the countries have paid more
attention to the sustainable development of international trade.
This article chose the export sustainable development as the
research object. On the basis of the analysis of the theoretical
connotation of the export sustainable development, this article
tried to establish an evaluation indices system and set up an
evaluation model of the export sustainable development level,
and nally made some empirical research on China. The result
indicates that the comprehensive level of the export sustainable
development in China showed a tendency to rise from 1985 to
2003 and the export sustainable development level of China in
these years can be divided into four grades: excellent, good,
moderate and poor. In most years, the social economic benets
of export was obtained at the cost of the deterioration of envi-
ronment and the depletion of resources, and the economic prot
of export did not increase with the enlargement of the export
scale because of the deterioration of the terms of trade. There-
fore, China should be careful about the problem of poverty ac-
companied by the increase of export.

1 Introduction
With the rise of the human trade doctrine in the interna-
tional trade eld, the concept of the sustainable develop-
ment of international trade has been raised in recent years
(Burney, 1996). Because of the inuence of the traditional
humanism ideology, the purpose of international trade in
the long run was to obtain the maximum amount of ma-
terial wealth and economic interest. In accordance with
the classical international trade theory, the development
of the north-south trade generally follows such a pattern
that the developing countries export labor or resources
