Preliminary Report on the Improvement of Drum Brake System for a Certain MPV Model The drum brake system, commonly utilized in commercial vehicles, serves as a crucial component in ensuring driving safety. With the continuous progress of society and technology, the demands on the braking system of automobiles on high-speed roads and long downhill roads have been increasing. Through investigation and analysis, it has been discovered that a certain MPV model has insufficient braking force due to issues with its drum brake system, leading to traffic accidents. Therefore, improving the operational performance of the vehicle's braking system, safeguarding the safe operation of the vehicle and the passengers, and reengineering the drum brake system has significant importance. The design of the brake system is regulated by relevant laws and standards, and it must comply with these regulations. Taking the regulations as the starting point, this paper first introduces a comprehensive discussion of automotive braking systems, analyzes the current research status of drum brake systems both domestically and internationally, and specifies the requirements that the braking system design must meet. The existing problems in the original drum brake system of the vehicle model are identified, and various types of drum brake systems are structurally and functionally analyzed to select a suitable system for the redesign. Through design calculations, the improved drum brake system meets the requirements set by regulations, showing enhancement in the braking distance and deceleration during braking for the MPV model. The distribution of braking torque in the brake system has been effectively optimized. Keywords: certain MPV model; drum brake system; improvement design; braking efficiency.
