Virtual instrument is a computer-based automated test equipment system that combines computer technology with instrument hardware, digital signal processing technology, and different software modules to create various instrument functions. Users can design their own instrument systems according to their testing needs by using data acquisition cards and computer peripheral hardware for signal acquisition and detection, and then using software developed on the computer for signal processing, calculation, analysis, and display of test results. This article discusses the development process and key points of a virtual oscilloscope software, which is developed using the graphical programming language LabVIEW. The corresponding hardware used is a computer sound card instead of an industrial data acquisition card, taking full advantage of the low-cost sound card for data acquisition. The article focuses on the design methods of several main modules including signal acquisition, trigger control, time base and amplitude control, and phase difference measurement.
