Global Positioning System (GPS) is an abbreviation for Navigation by satellite Timing And Ranging (NAVSTAR) / Global Position And System (GPS). It refers to a global positioning system that uses satellite navigation for timing and distance measurement. The GPS system plays a vital role in mapping and has various advantages in terms of convenience, cost-effectiveness, all-weather operation, and high positioning accuracy. In mapping, GPS system is utilized for monitoring the movement of modern tectonic plates, capturing earthquake information, carrying out design, construction, acceptance, and monitoring of engineering projects, as well as measuring global dynamic parameters and global geodetic control networks. The coordinate system used by the GPS system is the World Geodetic System (WGS-84), which is a global Earth-centered coordinate system. The GPS system comprises of three main components - the space constellation (space component), ground support system (ground monitoring component), and GPS receiver. Overall, the GPS system revolutionizes the way we navigate and determine our position on Earth, offering a reliable and efficient method for various applications in mapping, surveying, and navigation. With its widespread usage and continuous advancements, the GPS system continues to play a significant role in modern technology and society.
