MES Perspective
(Source: Bill Swanton AMR at MESA Roundtable)
l 1- The MES fits my manufacturing strategy (job shop, flow line, etc.)
Soft Configuration , feature based modeling, separation of policy from procedure
l 2 - The MES supports my investment in Supply Chain software (EPS, APS, etc.)
ERP interface established
l 3 - The MES helps me (the plant manager) manage my plant based on Key
Performance Indicators (KPI's) and it flags exceptions, such as orders that are taking
too long to manufacture.
Configurable Model, events, rules, agents
l 4 - The MES layers on my existing automation infrastructure (MMI, controls, etc.)
Lower MES Interface in hand
l 5 - The MES is quickly installed (in weeks)and requires a minimum of my staff time.
Workflow for process / procedure, Rules for plant policy, JAVA Bean IDE
l 6 - I can roll out the MES to additional plants quickly.
Standard COTS products, platform neutral
l 7 - I can upgrade the MES to a new revision level of the software without redoing my
integration and implementation.
Three tier model, light client, distributed object infrastructure
