Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 What is a Howtorial
A Howtorial is a combination of a HOWTO and a Tutorial. So this makes it an expanded howto with lots of
background information, that a howto normally lacks of.
The aim of this howtorial is to give you a lot of background information and quickly “getting the job done” in
the same time.
For more howtorials / forums / blogs / howto's, see: http://www.howtorial.eu/
1.2 What is it
The aim of this howtorial is to help you set up a low-budget Highly Available SAN, based on free and/or open
source software (Linux,Openfiler, DRBD, corosync) and used hardware.
The result will be a system that can compete with systems that cost tens of thousands of euro's, plus an equal
amount yearly for maintenance.
1.3 Support
As you might understand, we cannot give support on any of the subjects discussed in this howtorial.
We have, however, created a discussion forums on: http://www.howtorial.eu/forums/
So you can post questions, problems, tips, etcetara. Perhaps other users can help or advice. And in some
cases even I might find the time to help you.
If you find mistakes, errors or typos in this Howtorial, please make notice of it in the forums.

2.3 Openfiler
Openfiler is a popular Open Source Appliance Software Package that can convert any x86/64 system into a
NAS/SAN appliance or IP storage gateway. It can turn any “old” hardware into a Highly Available Storage
System or into a home fileserver. Please visit their website, if you didn't already: http://www.openfiler.com
This manual will cover the part where old hardware will be used to turn it into a H.A. iSCSI Storage System.
2.4 High Availability
What does that mean? Well, I don't need to explain it anymore, do I ?
For those that need some more info, please read this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_availability
2.4.1 Bonding
When you are really serious about H.A., your replicating network needs to be a bond from two NIC's.
Preferrably two seperate NIC's, not a single dual NIC, because of the hardware fail-over.
Some info on bonding:
http://linux-ip.net/html/ether-bonding.html
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/networking/bonding#MII_Monitor_Operation
2.4.2 Multipathing
For example Citrix XEN supports multipathing out of the box.
We could also consider NIC bonding here. However, XEN recommends multipathing instead of NIC bonding,
since bonding management interfaces only provides failover without load balancing.
