Foreword

Foreword
The Copernicus programme has been established to fulfil the needs of
European policy makers to access accurate and timely information, which will
help understand more precisely how the climate is changing, to mitigate its
short- and long-term eects and ultimately to manage better the environment,
and to ensure civil security.
As part of Copernicus, ESA is undertaking the development of Sentinel-,
an operational mission that will provide continuous, timely and accurate
measurements of the composition of Earth’s atmosphere over Europe and
North Africa.
On an hourly basis from a geostationary orbit Sentinel- will provide key
data on critical gaseous constituents of the troposphere such as O
(ozone),
NO
(nitrogen dioxide), SO
(sulphur dioxide), HCHO (formaldehyde), CHOCHO
(glyoxal) as well as aerosol and cloud properties.
This continuous stream of scientific data will be used in support of the
applications of Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Services (CAMS) for air
quality monitoring and forecasting, and for other fundamental chemistry and
climate applications.
The instrument Critical Design Review of the Sentinel- project was
successfully conducted between November and January .
Two identical Sentinel- instruments (Protoflight Model, PFM, and Flight
Model FM-), fully verified, qualified and calibrated, will be flown, as Customer
Furnished Items, on two Eumetsat satellites: Meteosat Third Generation
Sounding satellites and (MTG-S and MTG-S), which are currently planned
to operate between and .
