Introduction to Backlights
• Applications of backlights include devices from
PDAs, cellular phones, laptop computers to
large-screen TVs
• Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are the common
choice for displaying images/text
• Liquid crystals are not light-emitting materials
– Light sources must be added
• Backlights are used for flat panel LCDs that
require illumination from behind
• Goals for Backlight design
– Uniform luminance, high contrast, small
thickness, controlled viewing angle, low
power consumption, etc.

for large screen displays

Light Extraction
• Edge-lit
– Light is injected into the light guide, and
extracted in a perpendicular direction
– Printed (paint dots) or molded (3D bumps)

3D Texture

• Backlight systems with 3D Bumps are more popular
– Can be molded with the light guide
