Microphone Circuits
The (PDM) Digital Microphone pins on the ZL380xx can be connected in a number of ways depending on
the requirements of the design:
- Digital Microphones
o Distance between ZL380xx and microphone should be less than 0.5 meter
- Analog Electret Microphones
o Internal or Short cables
Analog microphones internal to the device
External microphone with cables less than 3 meters in length
o External Long cables
Cables with a length of greater than 5 meters
Cables used in an electrically noisy environment
Microphone Selection
Digital vs. Analog Microphones
Both digital and analog microphones work well with the ZL380xx. Below is a brief summary of the
tradeoffs between analog and digital microphones:
Digital Microphones
- Advantages
o More tolerant to mechanical
vibration
o More tolerant power supply
variations
o Simple schematic design
- Disadvantages
o Cost slightly more than analog
electret microphones
o Dynamic range is limited to
around 83-86dB
Analog Electret Microphones
- Advantages
o Better SNR assuming a good
voltage bias circuit
o Larger dynamic range
o Lower cost
- Disadvantages
o A pre-amplifier with digital
output is required
o Sensitivity to noise on the
microphone voltage bias circuit
o Sensitive to vibrational coupling

Digital Microphone Selection
When choosing a digital microphone, with a PDM output, select a microphone with a sensitivity
accuracy of +/- 3dB or better (+/- 2dB is preferred). Most digital microphones have a sensitivity of -
26dBFS (measured at 94 dBSPL). A higher sensitivity will pick up more audio, however it will also pick up
more noise. The microphone should also have a frequency response of at least 100 - 10,000 Hz (half of
the 16 kHz sampling rate of the ZL380xx). For the ZL38042 which has 24 kHz sampling this should be
12 kHz.
When using digital microphones the distance between the ZL380xx pins and the microphone should be
less than 1 meter.
Recommended Digital Microphones
- STMicroelectornics MP34DT01
- DBUnlimited MM042602-4/5/6
- Akustica AKU240 / AKU440
- Knowles SPM1423HM4H
