enjoys a near-sacred status among the Mongols 在蒙古族中享有近乎神圣的地位. These
people of the steppe 英 [step]大草原 traditionally roast meat over an open fire 在明火上烤
肉 - or boil it if it is less tender 不够嫩 - and bake their bread in special ovens. A goat or a
lamb might be roasted whole 烤全羊, or in sections.
Today, the diet of the Mongolians has been expanded to include vegetables as well as pasta
英 ['pæstə] and rice 饮食种类扩大了,包括蔬菜、面食和米饭. Milk remains a staple 仍是主
食 in the Mongolian diet, however 注意该词位置. It is also made into yoghurt 做成酸奶, milk

Hada, a Tibetan word, is a strip of silk used as a greeting gift 问候礼物 among both Tibetans
and Mongolians. It is presented 献 哈 达 under very specific circumstances only: when
welcoming unfamiliar guests in one's home or when encountering a stranger on the steppe
with whom a cordial relationship has developed 已 经建立了亲 切的关 系. Hada is usually
made from either silk or cotton 由丝绸或棉制成. Mongolian Hada is generally white in color
通常为白色, but shades 色彩 like light blue and light yellow occur as well. When one is lucky
enough to be presented a Hada 有幸获献哈达, one should grasp it gently in both hands 双
手轻轻地抓住 while bowing slightly 微微鞠躬, and the presenter 敬献哈达的人 will also
bow in return 会鞠躬还礼. The giving and receiving of Hada, including the act of bowing to
each other, is an outward sign of mutual respect.
Passing the snuffbox 鼻 烟 盒 is an old tradition in Mongolian culture, and is the most
common exchange of amenities 英 [ə'miːnəti 礼仪 when people meet. When one is a guest
in a Mongolian home, the host will take out his snuffbox, open it - its contents generally
being very aromatic 芬芳扑鼻 and consisting of a blend of tobacco and/or herbs 香草 - and
pass it on to the guest. One is expected to pass the snuffbox under one's nose in order to
better appreciate the tobacco's aroma 更好地体会烟叶的香气. To be polite, one should nod
one's head or give another sign of approbation 英 [.æprəʊ'beɪʃ(ə)n 再次表 示赞 许. This
shows respect and can serve as the basis for future amicable relations 为今后建立友好关系
奠定基础. The snuffbox contains a small spoon made either of gold, silver, copper, ivory, or
camel bone.
Naadam 那达慕, short for 是……的缩写 Eriyn Gurvan Naadam ("Three Manly Games") means
"entertainment" in the mind of the typical Mongolian. The Naadam Grasslands Festival has a
history that dates back to 历史可以追溯到 the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368 AD). The Festival is
held on the 4th day of the sixth month of the Chinese calendar 阴历六月四号 (between July
and August in the Gregorian calendar 公历), when the harvest season reaches culmination 当
收获季节要结束时. The Festival can last 3 to 10 days, depending on the scale of the event,
and people of any ethnic group or religious belief 任何民族或信仰的人们 can participate in
the games.
