New Product Introduction (NPI) Process Description
Introduction
The process outlined adopts NPI best practices from GE, GE Security, and elsewhere and
consolidates them into a common high-level process for use across Security. The NPI
process begins with the proposal of an idea and progresses through a series of decision points
(or tollgates) to culminate in the release of a new product to the market.
There are five Phases and four key DP’s (Decision Points or Tollgates).
Phases :-
1. Opportunity Identification Phase
2. Planning and Specification Phase
3. Design /Risk Reduction Phase
4. Verification and Commercialization Readiness Phase
5. Launch and Project Closure
DP’s
DP0 – Opportunity Justification. Preliminary MRD Review
DP1 – Plan Approval
DP2 – Final Design Approval
DP3 – NPI Readiness Review (Approval to Ship)
DP4 – Confirmation Review / Project Closure

The NPI process described should be considered a minimum set of activities and should not
preclude any project team from engaging in more detailed analysis as warranted and
determined by the Project Team.
Scope
The process applies to any major new product release or product extension and applies both to
internally funded and externally (customer, supplier etc.) funded programs. As a rule of
thumb consider a ‘major’ program to be a program that is either critical to the business or
requires Expense plus Investment of greater than $100K.
