It covers the concept, model, calculation methods, advantages, and disadvantages of the ecological footprint, as well as the current research trends both domestically and internationally. The article also discusses the future prospects of ecological footprint research in China. The research indicates that China currently has a high ecological footprint and a significant ecological deficit, which is expanding year by year and posing challenges to sustainable development. Therefore, there is a need for the further application of the ecological footprint model in China's economic development, with the potential expansion into more industries for sustainable assessment. Additionally, there is an opportunity for more in-depth research on individual and household ecological footprints, as well as the impact of new technology use on ecological footprints. Ultimately, the findings of this article highlight the importance of ecological footprint research in promoting sustainable development and ecological capacity.
