A Reconfigurable Proximity Coupled Antenna with
Frequency and Polarization Switching Capabilities

Abstract: A compact reconfigurable proximity coupled antenna with frequency and polarization
switching capabilities is presented in this paper. The frequency and polarization switching capabilities
are realized by using six PIN diodes across an eye-shaped slot on the ground plane. The proposed
antenna has six different operation status including linear polarization (LP), right-hand circular

polarization (RHCP) and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) wave. Due to the frequency and
polarization switching capabilities, the overall capacity of the antenna in the wireless transmissions
could be potentially enlarged.

0 Introduction
Presently, frequency and polarization diversification are the inevitable trend of the
development of wireless transmissions system. Some antennas with frequency and polarization
diversifications are presented. In
[1]
, a microstrip antenna loaded with diodes on the corners of the
patch and a bended slot on the patch to achieve switchable functionality between two LP bands 20
and one CP band. However, the reconfigurable range of this antenna is relatively small and the CP
bandwidth is relatively narrow. In [2], a two-probes-fed antenna with 8 PIN diodes on two
different patches can work in different frequency bands with different polarizations. However, the
complex probe feed structure results in complex processing and high cost. In [3], a reconfigurable
polarized antenna has been presented. The polarization switching capability is realized by 25
changeable slot structure on the ground plane. In [4], an annular gap defected ground structure is
used to reduce the patch size and to improve the efficiency of a microstrip antenna.
In this paper, a proximity coupled antenna with frequency and polarization switching
properties is presented. The proposed reconfigurable antenna is designed to work at 1.8GHz for
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), 2GHz for Wideband Code Division Multiple 30
Access (WCDMA) or 2.3GHz for Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access
(TD-SCDMA) with LP; or it can switch its polarization to LP, RHCP, or LHCP at 2.4GHz
Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. With these features, the proposed reconfigurable
antenna is very suitable for the use of wireless transmissions.

The geometry of the proposed proximity coupled antenna with an eye-shaped slot on the
ground plane is shown in Fig. 1. The rectangle feed line is etched between the two-layer FR4
dielectric substrate (thickness h=1.6mm, relative permittivity εr=4.4). The size of the two
substrates are both 50×50mm2. An eye-shaped slot is inserted into the ground plane.
