Lossless source coding is a reversible encoding method, which means that when the source symbols are converted into codes, the original source symbols can be restored without distortion from the codes. This paper mainly introduces several common methods of lossless coding: Shannon code, Fano code, arithmetic code, and Huffman code. It elaborates on the coding principles, coding process of each coding method, and the improvement and optimization of arithmetic code and Huffman code. With the rapid development of digital networks, lossless source coding methods and software simulation of Huffman coding are introduced, and the performance of image compression is analyzed. The last two chapters of the article introduce the application of lossless coding in MP3 and digital television broadcasting, and also discuss the future development trends. Lossless coding technology has ushered in development opportunities and challenges in the special era background of informatization, networking, and high-tech. The application fields of lossless coding are becoming more and more extensive, so coding methods need further in-depth research. Keywords: Lossless; Coding methods; Image compression.
