Abstract: The traffic light control system plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and orderly flow of vehicles and pedestrians at intersections. In this paper, a microcontroller-based traffic light control system is designed using the STC89C51 microcontroller as the main control unit. The P1 and P2 ports of the STC89C51 are used to control the red, yellow, and green lights for the east-west and north-south directions, while the RXD and TXD ports are utilized to display the countdown time on the digital tube. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are employed to indicate the status of the traffic lights, and the digital tube is used to display the remaining time. This system not only functions as a regular traffic light control system but also includes a countdown timer feature. Additionally, emergency mode can be activated by pressing a button, setting all lights to red in case of emergencies, and a night mode can be activated to set all lights to yellow during nighttime. Users can also customize the countdown time by pressing buttons, allowing the system to better adapt to real traffic situations. The traffic light control system designed in this paper effectively simulates the traffic conditions at intersections, enabling pedestrians and vehicles to pass through in an orderly manner. The system is cost-effective, easy to operate, stable in performance, and highly practical. Keywords: Traffic light control system, Microcontroller, AT89C51, Digital tube, LED
