Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of fintech on total factor productivity (TFP) of firms using a sample of US firms from 2006 to 2016. Our results show that fintech has a positive and significant impact on TFP, and this effect is more significant for firms in industries that are more information-intensive and technology-intensive, and for firms with higher R&D investment. Furthermore, we find that fintech's impact on TFP is larger for firms that are financially constrained and that operate in regions with less developed financial markets. Our results are robust to alternative measures of fintech and TFP, and to different econometric specifications. Our findings suggest that fintech has the potential to enhance firms' productivity and to promote economic growth.
