Robotics technology has advanced significantly in recent years, with the development of high-level walking robots being a prime example. In order for these robots to successfully navigate their surroundings, they must be able to detect the presence and intensity of light. This can be achieved by building a pair of light-sensitive resistor circuits on a breadboard. Light-sensitive resistors, also known as LDRs, are resistors whose resistance is directly related to the intensity of light they are exposed to. Similar to the human eye, they are highly sensitive to light. The active element in LDRs that is responsible for their light sensitivity is Cadmium Sulfide (CdS). When light enters the ceramic semiconductor light-sensitive layer, it excites free charge carriers, resulting in a resistance that is inversely proportional to the intensity of light – the weaker the light, the higher the resistance, and vice versa. These unique resistors are readily available in the components we provide. Should you require additional LDRs, they can be purchased from the Parallax company's component store or other electronic component suppliers. Refer to Appendix A for the Walking Robot Parts List and Resources. The specifications of the LDRs are detailed in Table 5-1. In conclusion, the incorporation of light-sensitive resistors into the design of high-level walking robots is essential for enabling them to effectively perceive and respond to their environment. Through the utilization of cutting-edge technology and components such as LDRs, these robots are equipped with the capability to navigate various terrains and obstacles with precision and accuracy. As robotics continue to evolve, the integration of light-sensing capabilities will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in further enhancing the functionality and performance of these advanced machines.
