Single sign-on (SSO) is a crucial component in campus identity management systems. In a typical environment, there are multiple information systems within a school or enterprise, each requiring user authentication. Traditional authentication mechanisms rely on usernames and passwords, leading to the creation of separate user databases for each system. This results in users having to log in multiple times when accessing resources across different systems, consuming significant time and requiring them to remember numerous account credentials. SSO systems address this challenge by mapping real users to a digital identity and securely transmitting it to various systems efficiently. With SSO, users only need to undergo authentication once to obtain their electronic identity. Subsequently, the SSO system automatically transfers this identity to different systems for authentication, enabling users to access resources across systems efficiently and enhancing productivity. This article explores the concept, advantages, and implementation of SSO in a campus identity management system based on Sun ONE. Keywords such as single sign-on, cross-domain single sign-on, network identity, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), authentication server, and directory server are discussed in detail. Ultimately, SSO plays a vital role in streamlining access to resources, improving workflow efficiency, and enhancing security within campus identity management systems.
