Transport & Logistics Journal Rankings
27 September 2003, UPDATED 2005:
I have updated the initial 2003 document to identify the tier 1 journals in Transportation Research
and separately in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (for purposes of SBus funding of $5,000
per tier 1 publication). Seven journals make tier 1 in Transportation and six for logistics and supply
chain management. I have summarised what other reviews of journal has said. It should be noted
that Environment and Planning A is now on the list and the Journal of the Transportation Research
Board is struggling to stay there. It is recommended that ITLS academics and research staff focus
on the top journal and less of conferences. Sadly conferences like ATRF amount to little in
academic merit, as does TRB.

I have prepared the following advice given the absence of any formal assessment of transportation
and logistics journals. The contributors are all very highly respected academics in the field:
• Professor Peter Bonsall (PB) Institute of Transport Studies, University of Leeds
• Professor Mary R. Brooks (MRB) School of Business, Dalhousie University
• Professor Sergio Jara Diaz (SJD) University of Chile
• Professor Tien Fang Fwa Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore
• Professor Claire Felbinger (CF) Department of Public Administration at the School of Public
Affairs, American University
• Professor John Fernie (JF) School of Management, Heriot-Watt University
• Professor David Gillen (DG) School of Business & Economics, University of California,
Berkeley
• Professor Curt Grimm (CG) Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland
• Professor Trevor Heaver (TH) Centre for Transportation Studies, University of British
Columbia

Mellon University, Pittsburgh

• Professor Herbert Richardson (HR) Texas Transportation Institute, Texas A&M University
System
• Professor Laurence R. Rilett (LRR) Department of Civil Engineering, Texas A&M
University
• Dr Ian Sadler (IS) School of Management, Victoria University
• Professor Joseph L. Schofer (JLS) Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied
Science, Northwestern University
• Professor Kumares C. Sinha (KCS) School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University
• Professor Kenneth A. Small (KAS) Department of Economics, University of California
• Professor Roger Stough (RS) Centre for Transport Policy & Logistics, George Mason
University
• Dr Wayne K. Talley (WKT) Editor-in-Chief, Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and
Transportation Review
• Professor Martin Wachs Institute of Transportation Studies, University of California,
Berkeley
• Dr Tony Whiteing (TW) Division of Transport & Logistics, Huddersfield University
In addition I have obtained advice from the publishing expert from Elsevier.
The journals listed below are ranked according to the number of academics to recommend the
journal; only journals recommended by three or more academics are included. Further comments on
the ranking of these journals may be found in the Appendix under the name of the contributor.
Journal titles marked with an asterisk are those that are listed in the ISI's Science Citation Index and
Social Science Citation Index under the categories for Transportation Science (SCI) and
Transportation (SSCI). More details of this ranking are given in the Appendix in the contribution
from Elsevier. Also provided in the Appendix is the following article: Gibson, Brian J., Joe B.
Hanna, and David A. Menachof (2001) “An International Analysis of the Value of Logistics
Periodicals for Teaching, Research, and Outreach Purposes,” Proceedings of the 6
th
Logistics
Research Network Annual Conference, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Journals which in this analysis
have a composite usefulness score which ranked them in the top 20 European journals have EU
marked next to the journal title, those that using the same measurement were ranked within the top
15 American journals have US marked next to the journal title.
The views of these academics are a guide only and it is generally recognised throughout the
discipline that the following are the tier 1 journals:
Transportation
• Transportation Research B: Methodological
• Transportation Science
• Journal of Transport Economics and Policy
• Transportation Research A: Policy & Practice
• Transportation
• Transportation Research Record (Journal of the Transportation Research Board)
Logistics and Supply Chain
• International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

• Journal of Business Logistics
• Transportation Research E: Logistics & Transportation Review
• International Journal of Logistics Management
• International Journal of Logistics: Research & Application
• International Journal of Operations and Production Management
