and Mapping (SLAM) is a technology used to build maps in unknown or known environments while tracking the current position. In order to build a map, we must know our location; and to determine our location, we need a map! SLAM is a technique commonly used in autonomous vehicles, allowing them to not only build maps but also simultaneously locate themselves on those maps. To achieve SLAM, two main types of technologies are required. One type is sensor signal processing (including front-end processing), which largely depends on the sensors used. The other type is pose graph optimization (including back-end processing), which is independent of the sensors being used. SLAM technology is utilized in various fields such as robotics, drones, autonomous driving, AR, VR, etc., and relies on sensors to achieve functions like autonomous positioning, mapping, path planning, and more. SLAM can be considered as a real-time version of Structure from Motion (SfM). The hardware involved in SLAM includes mobile robots and distance measurement devices. Overall, SLAM has proven to be a useful and versatile technology with applications in numerous industries and continues to advance with the development of new sensors and algorithms.
