The Design and Implementation of License Plate Image Recognition Based on MATLAB is a crucial component of modern intelligent traffic management systems. The system enhances the intelligence and digitization of vehicle management, thereby improving the convenience and effectiveness of traffic control. The recognition system consists of five core parts: image acquisition, image preprocessing, license plate localization, character segmentation, and character recognition. This paper focuses on the implementation of image preprocessing, license plate localization, and character segmentation modules. The image preprocessing module involves converting images to grayscale and performing edge detection using the Roberts operator. License plate localization and segmentation utilize mathematical morphology to determine the license plate's position and a color segmentation method based on the license plate's color information to segment the plate. Character segmentation involves vertical projection of the binarized license plate followed by scanning the vertical projections to achieve character segmentation. The simulation experiments conducted in the MATLAB software environment demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, indicating good performance in character segmentation. This research contributes to the advancement of intelligent transportation systems by providing a detailed methodology for license plate image recognition. Overall, the study showcases the importance of image processing, license plate localization, and character segmentation in the development of efficient license plate recognition systems.
