Abstract. According to the requirement of remote real-time water quality monitoring, this paper
design a heterogeneous network topology including wireless sensor network and wireless mesh
network. Based on Zigbee protocol a network system that can realize real-time water PH remote
monitoring was constructed. In the system, the networking technology and network performance were
studied by programming on real equipment. The study results shown that the system can realize
real-time water quality PH monitoring data acquire and wireless transmission. Through Zigbee
protocol under wireless mesh sensor network the performance of data transmission such as drop rate,
delay, error rate are better than before. Those result proved that the manual based water quality
monitoring can be replaced by Zigbee based wireless mesh sensor network monitoring system with
more detail data acquire.
Introduction
In recent years, phenomenon of water scarcity, industrial sewage and waste water increase seriously
with global population growth and industrial development. Therefore, it is particularly important that
timely know the water quality current situation, growing tendency and real-time monitoring it. The
water quality monitoring is defined that monitor and measure the type, concentration and tendency of
pollutants, then evaluate the conditions of water quality. At present, water quality monitoring mainly
object to unpolluted and polluted natural water (including river, lake, sea and ground water) and
various drainage. The method of water quality monitoring has run into automatic monitoring age from
the traditional manual monitoring. Moreover, the water quality monitoring system has developed into
wireless monitoring or on-line monitoring from manual sampling monitoring. At the moment, there
are many research and application for water quality automatic monitoring system which based on
wireless sensor network[1][2], but the effectiveness ,usability, robustness of those system are
insufficient. In order to solve these problems, this paper introduces a heterogeneous wireless network
system to meet the water quality monitoring need.
WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) [3]is self-organization and multi-hop wireless communication
network that consist many energy-saving sensor nodes which are stationary or moving
miniature.WSN integrated many top technology such as integrated microelectronics, embedded
computing, wireless communications and distributed information processing, which can percept,
acquire, process, transmit, perceive monitoring object. The characteristics of WSN are these large
number of sensor nodes, wide distribution, dynamic networking, huge data steam perception, data
centered and so on. Currently, WSN has been applied into many fields as environmental monitoring
(including water quality monitoring) and protecting, medical care, military, target tracking and so
on[4]. At same time, there are still some insufficient limits on energy, communication ability,
computing power, homogeneous network instability when it is applied to monitor complex
environment. Previous researches show that deploying some high capacity nodes into homogeneous
