3. Mission and Objectives

[The project mission statement specifies the client business need, the basic product or service the project will
produce, the primary market served, and the principal technology used. The mission statement serves several
fundamental purposes:
The mission statement is the focal point for the project team.
It facilitates the translation of objectives and goals into the project’s solution and approach.
It establishes unanimity of purpose within the project team and involved organisations.
The mission statement motivates management to allocate sufficient resources with the right skill levels to
establish a team that can get the job done.
It establishes a sense of purpose in the project team that builds “can-do” attitudes.]
3.1. Purpose
The purpose of the Project Mission and Objectives is to provide the project background, business objectives,
solution overview, critical success factors, critical milestones and assumptions that need to be taken into
account throughout the project lifecycle in order to successfully complete the project and satisfy both HP and
Client Name expectations.
3.2. Project Background
[Provide a brief introduction to the project and explain what this project will accomplish for the client.]
3.3. Client Business Situation
[Describe the client’s environment and the business drivers that are initiating change. If a Solution Business
Case exists, review that document for input.]
3.3.1. Client’s Value Chain
[Describe the client’s value chain in order to position HP’s engagement within that value chain.]
3.3.2. Client’s Business Objectives
[Describe the client’s business objectives in terms of Growth]
[Describe the client’s growth goals. Describe what the desired growth change is that drives the client’s interest
in pursuing the project. Common examples of growth goals are: increasing market share, the number of
markets served, variety in the number of products offered, technologies used to provide goods and services,
etc.]
[Describe the client’s business objectives in terms of Profitability]
[Describe the client’s profitability goals. Identify them as short or long-term goals. Describe what the desired
profitability change is that drives the client’s interest in pursuing the project. Common examples are: cost-
cutting programs, use of technology to reduce costs of production/service, change of market strategy, etc.]
[Describe the client’s business objectives in terms of Survival]
[If the client is pursuing the project to address any survivability concerns, state them here. These are usually
short-term goals. Describe both the short-term and long-term impacts the project will have that drive the
