(0.2 < δ < 0.3) was
prepared by reaction of the elements in evacuated silica ampoules.
The structures of crystals grown in the presence of excess zinc or
alternatively excess platinum were determined from single crystal
X-ray diffraction intensities and confirmed by Rietveld profile fits.

According to Hume-Rothery’s supposition [1] the crystal
structures of various noble metal alloys are invariant with
respect to specific valence electron concentrations (vec).
Among them are the so-called γ-brass type phases [2, 3]
emerging at vec values close to 21/13 electrons per atom.
Electron microscopy studies and constitutional analyses of
the γ-regions of selected noble metal alloy systems like
Cu⫺Zn [4] or Cd⫺Pt [5] revealed subtle variations of vec
resulting in additional structural differentiation. These find-

just one γ-phase but a bundle of structurally related, com-
plex phases, several of which may not have been identified
yet. In this context we started to reinvestigate the Zn-rich
part of the Pt⫺Zn system for which four phases were pre-
viously reported [5⫺8]. Only the structures of ξ-Pt

Zn

[7]
and γ-Pt

Zn

[8] have been characterized by single crystal
X-ray means. The structures of PtZn
5
[5,6] and PtZn
8
[5,9]
are not known. Indeed, we found the γ-phase region of the
Pt⫺Zn system to accommodate not just two but at least six
distinct phases. Here we report in detail the structure and
properties of Pt
2
Zn
10.72(1)
whose homogeneity range extends
neither to the previously suggested composition of PtZn
5
[5] nor to the composition Pt
2
Zn
11
[10]. Moreover,
Pt
2
Zn
10.72
differs structurally from the congeneric
M
2⫹δ
Zn
11⫺δ
phases. For the Ni and Pd phases, vec is shifted
towards the expected value of 21/13 electrons/atom by a
partial substitution of the group 10 metal atoms for Zn at
